Athens Technical College President Andrea Daniel Announces Retirement After Decade of Leadership

Andrea Daniel, who has guided Athens Technical College through a decade of institutional expansion, academic milestones, and facility growth, will officially retire from her post as president on Dec. 1. The impending departure marks the end of a notable 10-year presidential term leading the public technical college.

The college officially announced Daniel’s retirement on Tuesday, reflecting on her extended leadership and her longstanding relationship with the institution. During her decade at the helm, Daniel directed strategic operations, oversaw multi-million-dollar capital investments, and expanded educational access across the institution's regional footprint in northeast Georgia.

Athens Technical College carries a long history in Georgia’s technical education landscape. Established in 1958 as a vocational and technical school, the institution was originally founded to equip local students with essential technical capabilities and trade skills to meet the demands of an evolving regional economy.

Daniel took the reins as the college's fourth president in April 2016, assuming leadership following the departure of Flora Tydings. Tydings had previously served as the institution's president before stepping down to take on a higher education leadership role at a college in Tennessee.

Prior to her appointment to the presidency, Daniel was already an integral part of the Athens Tech administrative fabric. She had served at the college for 19 years in various institutional roles before being named president, providing her with deep institutional familiarity and firsthand knowledge of campus operations, faculty needs, and student body dynamics.

Daniel’s upcoming retirement also marks the completion of a distinguished, multi-decade career dedicated to state service. In total, she has worked for the state of Georgia for 30 years, dedicating three decades of public service to advancing education, vocational development, and regional workforce readiness.

A native of Elberton, Georgia, Daniel has held strong personal and professional ties to the surrounding northeast Georgia communities. Early in her career, she worked directly on the Elbert County campus of Athens Tech, giving her a close connection to the regional satellite locations that support rural and non-metropolitan students across the service area.

During her tenure, Athens Technical College achieved significant benchmarks in academic reform and student support. Tech became the first higher education institution in the state of Georgia to join the national Achieving the Dream network and subsequently earned the organization's Leader College distinction in recognition of its sustained progress in advancing student success.

Under Daniel's stewardship, the college underwent extensive campus growth and modernization. College officials highlighted a substantial list of new facilities, state-of-the-art learning environments, and infrastructural achievements that were developed throughout her decade-long presidency.

Among the early structural developments of her administration was the establishment of the Technical College Library in 2017, designed to enhance research and learning tools. Daniel’s administration also invested significantly in regional programming with the development of an $8.2 million Agriculture Science Building located directly on the college's Elbert County campus.

Capital projects continued to transform the main campus environment in 2019 with the construction of a new $3 million visitor center. The dedicated facility was built to welcome prospective students, families, industry partners, and community members arriving at the college.

In 2020, Daniel’s administration advanced another major infrastructural initiative with the design and eventual opening of a 39,000-square-foot Industrial Systems and Economic Development Building. This expansive facility was created to provide cutting-edge instructional spaces for high-demand technical careers, including specialized training in air conditioning technology and industrial systems.

Daniel's executive service and community impact earned her prominent regional and institutional accolades. She was elected to serve on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees, contributing to regional higher education accreditation and governance, and in 2020 she was honored in the local community with the prestigious Athena Award in Athens.

Beyond its primary facilities, Athens Tech continues to maintain an expansive regional footprint. The college operates critical satellite campuses across Elbert, Greene, and Walton counties, ensuring that students throughout the service area have direct access to workforce instruction, certification programs, and technical education.

College officials have not yet released a formal timeline or procedural plan regarding the search process to select the institution's fifth president. Governing leadership is expected to address transition logistics and the presidential search in the months leading up to Daniel's official retirement date.

Daniel’s scheduled departure on Dec. 1 will bring to a close a 10-year presidential administration that modernized campus infrastructure, expanded regional academic offerings, and solidified Athens Technical College’s role in Georgia's workforce development system.
