Augusta-Area Communities Prepare Array of Ceremonies and Memorials for 25th Anniversary of 9/11

Communities throughout the greater Augusta area are preparing a diverse series of commemorative observances to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. A quarter-century after the historic tragedy, regional municipalities, civic groups, emergency response agencies, and military personnel are organizing events dedicated to honoring the memory of the victims and recognizing the enduring bravery of first responders and service members.

While municipal tributes by the city of Augusta alongside ceremonies at Augusta University were conducted on the preceding Saturday, several neighboring localities across the surrounding region have scheduled their official remembrance activities for Friday. These widespread observances encompass physical memorial challenges, community festivals, theatrical performances, charitable dinners, high school football tributes, and formal military ceremonies.

In Columbia County, local emergency personnel will host a solemn physical challenge to honor the emergency workers who responded at Ground Zero. Columbia County Fire Rescue is holding its 25th Anniversary 911 Memorial Stair Climb at 7015 Evans Town Center Boulevard in Evans, offering both first responders and the general public a dedicated venue for shared remembrance.

The Columbia County observance commences with a formal remembrance ceremony scheduled for 8 a.m., followed immediately by the stair climb. Participating firefighters plan to remain on-site after the opening ceremony to scale 55 flights of stairs, an intentional physical tribute symbolizing the 110 flights located within the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The event is open to the public at no cost, allowing area residents to climb alongside local firefighters.

Across the state line in South Carolina, the Aiken County Firefighters' Association has organized a comprehensive daytime community gathering. Scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, the 9/11 Memorial Walk will take place at the Beverly D. Clyburn Generations Park, located at 700 Mack Henry Holland Drive in Aiken.

The Aiken memorial event is designed to bring local families and emergency responders together through a blend of reflective activities and community recreation. The program features a designated firefighter walk alongside an array of on-site food trucks, live musical entertainment, and an interactive children's area. Further details and scheduling updates are being made available through the association's official Facebook page.

Aiken is also offering cultural commemorations through the performing arts with a local staging of the acclaimed musical "Come From Away." Hosted by the Aiken Community Theatre at 126 Newberry Street Southwest, the production is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. performances on both Friday and Saturday evenings.

The musical dramatizes the remarkable real-world events following the 2001 attacks, when 7,000 airline passengers were unexpectedly grounded in Newfoundland after North American airspace was closed, and chronicles the small Canadian community that sheltered them. While Friday's opening night performance reached full capacity and sold out, tickets for the Saturday show were still available earlier in the week through the theater's digital ticketing portal.

Further west in Harlem, veterans and residents will gather for an evening of fellowship and remembrance at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6445. Located at 330 East Milledgeville Road, the post is hosting a special Steak Night dinner scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday.

Admission tickets for the VFW dinner are priced at $20 each and will be available for purchase at the post beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Although walk-in attendees are welcomed to join the community meal, organizers noted that overall steak supplies for the evening are limited.

In Graniteville, student athletes and local emergency agencies are uniting to integrate patriotic tributes into Friday night high school sports. Midland Valley High School will pay special tribute to military veterans and first responders during pre-game ceremonies and halftime activities at its campus located at 227 Mustang Drive.

Scheduled ahead of the 7:30 p.m. kickoff, the high school's tribute will include distributing 100 commemorative hats to visiting first responders and veterans in attendance. The Graniteville Fire Department will also be present with its ladder truck to unfurl and display the American flag as football players make their traditional run down the hill into the stadium. Furthermore, local law enforcement officers and military veterans will personally place U.S. flag decals onto the back of every Midland Valley player's helmet.

Solemn military honors will also be rendered at Fort Gordon, where installation officials are holding a private Remembrance Ceremony on Friday morning. The military observance is set to take place at 8:30 a.m. on base grounds within Freedom Park.

Attendance for the Fort Gordon ceremony is restricted exclusively to Department of War identification card holders. The ceremony will feature an artillery tribute with cannon volleys timed specifically to coincide with the precise moments each hijacked aircraft struck during the 2001 attacks.

Together, these diverse memorial gatherings across Columbia County, Aiken County, Harlem, and regional military grounds highlight the enduring significance of Sept. 11. Twenty-five years after the historic tragedy, communities throughout the Augusta region continue to unite through athletic endurance, art, community meals, and military salutes to ensure the legacy of that fateful day is never forgotten.
