A chaotic and dangerous situation unfolded on Sunday evening in East Hampton when a motorist repeatedly breached an active emergency perimeter, ultimately striking a working firefighter before speeding away from the scene. Emergency officials described the incident as a near-catastrophe that could have easily resulted in severe trauma or loss of life for multiple first responders on duty.
The collision occurred on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026, while crews were actively managing the aftermath of an earlier two-vehicle accident. East Hampton Fire Chief Robert Rainville detailed the harrowing sequence of events in a public statement, expressing deep relief that the struck crew member avoided critical harm while noting how close the situation came to a far darker outcome.
According to department officials, emergency personnel were already fully deployed at the roadway site when the suspect vehicle first approached the perimeter. Firefighters, municipal police officers, and civilian towing service operators were all present within the cordoned roadway, carrying out standard accident cleanup and traffic control duties.
Before the motorist reached the primary collision zone, local police officers observed the vehicle and attempted to execute a traffic stop. Rather than complying with law enforcement commands to halt, the driver accelerated abruptly, initiating a high-speed flight directly past the active emergency area.
During that initial high-velocity pass, the vehicle managed to blow past the line of first responders without causing any immediate physical impacts or injuries. The sudden evasion forced working personnel to remain on high alert as the car disappeared down the roadway, leaving emergency crews to resume securing the original crash site.
However, the danger escalated dramatically roughly five minutes later when the very same automobile inexplicably reappeared in the area, approaching the collision scene from the opposite direction. Rather than slowing down upon encountering the visible flashing emergency lights and warning devices, the driver continued forward aggressively.
Chief Rainville reported that the vehicle bypassed an East Hampton fire truck positioned to shield the workspace, deliberately maneuvering around the heavy apparatus. In doing so, the car mowed down several placed traffic safety cones that had been arranged to cordon off the active work area from passing traffic.
As the car barreled past the safety perimeter, it directly struck an East Hampton firefighter who was working on foot within the designated zone. The physical impact knocked the responder as the vehicle maintained momentum through the operational footprint of the responders.
Following the impact with the firefighter, the motorist did not stop to render aid or survey the damage. Instead, the driver began aggressively zigzagging through the crowded emergency scene, narrowly threading between emergency vehicles and working personnel before breaking away from the perimeter entirely.
The vehicle was last seen accelerating rapidly in a westbound direction along Route 66, heading toward the neighboring community of Portland. Responders immediately coordinated to broadcast descriptions of the fleeing vehicle while prioritizing aid for their injured colleague on the ground.
The struck firefighter was swiftly attended to by on-scene personnel before being transported to a regional hospital for formal medical evaluation and treatment. Assessments indicated that the firefighter suffered what appeared to be minor injuries, allowing department leadership and fellow crew members to breathe a collective sigh of relief.
Reflecting on the near-miss, Chief Rainville emphasized that the outcome was extraordinarily fortunate given the sheer number of people working within the striking path of the vehicle. With multiple agencies, including tow operators and police, congregated in the roadway, an errant vehicle driving unpredictably through the center of the scene presented an extreme threat to everyone present.
By early Monday morning, authorities had not publicly confirmed whether any suspects had been identified or taken into custody following the hit-and-run incident. Law enforcement investigators continued to review evidence from the scene and track the vehicle's direction of travel along Route 66.
Additionally, key questions surrounding the incident remained under active review, including whether the fleeing motorist had any prior involvement with the initial two-vehicle crash that first brought responders to the roadway. Officials have not yet disclosed what prompted the driver to flee the initial traffic stop or why the vehicle returned to the scene minutes later.
The incident underscores the extreme hazards emergency responders encounter while operating on public roadways, where secondary crashes and reckless drivers pose an ongoing threat to personnel outside of their vehicles. East Hampton authorities are continuing their investigation into the driver’s identity and whereabouts.
