Law enforcement authorities and emergency responders throughout Elkhart County dealt with a series of critical public safety emergencies on Monday, including a tragic fatal shooting inside a residential property, two severe vehicle collisions that left several individuals hospitalized, and multiple reports of financial fraud targeting elderly residents.
The most severe incident occurred late Monday morning when officers were called to investigate a shooting that claimed the life of a young local woman. The Elkhart Police Department received an emergency call at approximately 11:38 a.m. directing personnel to a residential address located within the 300 block of Pierre Moran Drive in Elkhart.
Upon arriving at the scene, emergency personnel discovered a female victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound inside the home. The wounded woman was identified by authorities as 21-year-old Jessica Martinez, an Elkhart resident. First responders immediately initiated medical aid and arranged for her rapid transport to an area hospital, where medical staff attempted lifesaving interventions. Despite these efforts, Martinez succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
In accordance with established regional procedures for major violent crimes, the Elkhart County Homicide Unit was immediately activated to take command of the investigation. Detectives processed the residential scene, gathered physical evidence, and interviewed individuals connected to the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.
Following preliminary investigative work, homicide detectives apprehended a 17-year-old male suspect in connection with Martinez’s death. The teenager was taken into custody and transported directly to the Juvenile Detention Center, where he was booked on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide. Law enforcement representatives emphasized that the shooting appears to have been an isolated event, assuring residents that there is no continuing threat to the broader community. Investigators continue to urge anyone with relevant details to contact the Elkhart County Homicide Unit directly at 574-295-2825 or submit confidential tips through Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
Later in the day, the focus of emergency personnel expanded to major thoroughfares as county deputies responded to a succession of serious traffic incidents involving non-traditional roadway travelers. The first major collision occurred late Monday afternoon in a rural section of the county characterized by mixed vehicle traffic.
At approximately 4:53 p.m., deputies with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 62000 block of Ind. 13 to investigate a severe crash between a motor vehicle and a horse-drawn buggy. Investigators determined that 51-year-old Christopher Mills of Elkhart had been operating a 2016 Chrysler Town & Country minivan northbound along the state highway when his vehicle rear-ended the buggy traveling ahead of him.
The horse-drawn conveyance was occupied by two Millersburg residents, 22-year-old driver Michael Schwartz and 22-year-old passenger Cynthia Schwartz. The force of the rear-end impact caused catastrophic damage to the buggy and resulted in Cynthia Schwartz being violently ejected from the carriage onto the roadway.
Emergency medical services arrived quickly to evaluate the three individuals involved in the collision. First responders transported Cynthia Schwartz, Michael Schwartz, and Christopher Mills to regional hospitals for treatment of their respective injuries, highlighting the ongoing vulnerabilities and safety challenges associated with sharing rural roadways with slow-moving animal-drawn buggies.
Only a few hours later, emergency crews were called to another serious vehicle accident, this time involving a motor vehicle and an electric bicycle in the community of Dunlap. The incident occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m. along C.R. 13 near its intersection with Broadway Boulevard.
Sheriff’s deputies determined that 18-year-old Angelina Contreras of Elkhart was traveling north on C.R. 13 in a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse, following behind an electric bicycle operated by 56-year-old Audra Bogucki, also of Elkhart. According to crash investigators, Contreras initiated a passing maneuver to overtake the slower-moving e-bike and then merged back into the northbound travel lane.
Shortly after completing the pass, Contreras attempted to execute an eastbound turn onto Broadway Boulevard. The driver informed investigating officers that she did not notice Bogucki riding alongside her sport utility vehicle at the time of the maneuver. Consequently, Bogucki’s electric bicycle struck the side of the turning Traverse.
The secondary collision caused Bogucki to be thrown from the bicycle, after which she was run over by the Chevrolet Traverse. Paramedics transported the 56-year-old cyclist to Memorial Hospital for treatment of a fractured arm as well as potential internal injuries, underscoring the critical need for heightened awareness between motorists and vulnerable cyclists sharing congested suburban corridors.
In addition to handling violent crime and life-threatening roadway collisions, area law enforcement agencies were also called to address financial exploitation incidents within the neighboring community of Goshen on the same day.
Officers with the Goshen Police Department logged two separate fraud reports from senior residents within a span of five hours. At 8:05 a.m. Monday, an 85-year-old woman contacted municipal police to report discovering fraudulent and unauthorized transactions on her personal bank account. Later that day, at approximately 12:50 p.m., a 75-year-old woman filed an official police report stating that she had fallen victim to an unspecified fraudulent scheme.
Together, the string of incidents throughout Monday placed substantial demands on municipal police departments, county deputies, and medical teams across Elkhart County. As criminal and collision investigations proceed, authorities remain engaged in determining all contributing factors behind the fatal shooting on Pierre Moran Drive and assessing the circumstances surrounding both major roadway collisions.
