Freeport Park District Launches LEGO Building Contest Celebrating Parks and Recreation

The Freeport Park District has formally announced an engaging new creative challenge, inviting local brick-building enthusiasts and community members to test their design skills in a specialized LEGO-themed competition. The initiative focuses on the vital intersection of recreation, open-air play, and community spaces, encouraging participants to translate their personal visions of outdoor leisure into miniature artistic structures crafted entirely from interlocking toy bricks.

Prospective builders who wish to enter the contest must finalize and deliver their finished models to the Freeport Park District Administration Center by the established deadline of September 11. Park district officials noted that meeting this intake cutoff is essential to allow staff adequate time to organize and prepare all the entries for the subsequent public exhibition phase.

The competition provides an expansive thematic framework, giving builders wide latitude in how they choose to express concepts related to parks, active play, and outdoor environments. Contenders are officially encouraged to construct a diverse range of subjects, including traditional public parks, neighborhood playgrounds, dynamic sports fields, serene nature landscapes, wildlife habitats, or any other imaginative scenes inspired by recreation.

Although participants enjoy considerable artistic liberty regarding subject matter, they are required to adhere strictly to defined physical dimensions. Every submission must be entirely assembled prior to drop-off and cannot exceed twelve inches in height, twelve inches in width, and twelve inches in depth. These spatial parameters ensure that every model fits comfortably within the designated display area while presenting an equal challenge to all competing builders.

Entry into the district challenge requires a nominal registration fee of $10 per submitted creation. Event organizers have emphasized that the contest is broadly open to any LEGO builder who wishes to display their craftsmanship, connect with fellow creators, and showcase imaginative interpretations of public play spaces.

Once the September 11 submission window closes, the competition will shift into an extended exhibition period designed to engage the broader neighborhood. Beginning on September 14 and running through October 2, all qualifying entries will be placed on public display at the facility, offering local residents a dedicated timeframe to view the diverse brick creations up close.

Rather than leaving the judging duties to a panel of designated officials, the contest relies completely on a democratic community voting system. Throughout the multi-week public viewing window, visiting residents and patrons will have the opportunity to evaluate the full collection of displays and cast official ballots for the builds they find most impressive.

Organizers are strongly encouraging all registered participants to involve their personal networks by inviting friends, family members, and neighbors to visit the display location during the voting window. This community-driven approach aims to bolster local turnout and generate wide public enthusiasm for each of the exhibited creations.

Following the conclusion of the public voting process on October 2, the entries that capture the highest share of community votes will be awarded special prizes. The overall first-place winner will secure the contest's grand prize, consisting of a $50 park gift certificate that can be utilized toward district offerings.

In addition to the grand prize winner, outstanding runners-up will also receive official district recognition for their building accomplishments. Contest organizers announced that runners-up will be presented with Family Fun Packs designated for Krape Park, providing additional opportunities for family recreation and outdoor enjoyment.

By highlighting parks, recreation, and wildlife habitats through the medium of toy bricks, the Freeport Park District seeks to emphasize the ongoing significance of local parks in everyday community life while offering a unique outlet for artistic talent.

This local building contest forms part of a vibrant season for brick construction enthusiasts across the region. Outside of Freeport, LEGO fans across the state can also look forward to a major LEGO Convention scheduled to take place at the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield on October 10 and October 11, 2026.

For builders intending to participate in the Freeport contest, attention must now turn toward completing designs before the September 11 drop-off deadline at the administration center. Once the submission phase wraps up, the community will take center stage to review the entries during the display and voting window running from September 14 to October 2.

Through the combination of hands-on creativity, community-wide voting, and the celebration of open spaces, the Freeport Park District's contest provides a fun and structured forum for residents to share their passion for both LEGO building and public parks.
