Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council Honors Iowa Capital Dispatch With Inaugural Media Impact Award

The Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council has formally recognized the investigative journalism of the Iowa Capital Dispatch, presenting the independent online news organization with its first-ever Media Impact Award. The statewide advocacy group presented the honor to acknowledge the publication’s continuous, in-depth reporting that elevates and amplifies the voices and experiences of Iowans with disabilities.

Announced during the council’s annual conference convened in Ames, the newly established award honors journalistic work that highlights critical matters affecting individuals with disabilities. Council leaders emphasized that the newsroom's ongoing coverage has played an essential role in bringing pressing public policy and institutional concerns before the wider public.

A central foundation for the award was the news outlet's persistent investigative reporting on the mistreatment, neglect, and abuse occurring within Iowa's long-term care facilities. Through detailed scrutiny of state records and care centers, the publication has consistently documented systemic breakdowns in oversight and resident care across the state.

During the presentation ceremony, Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council Chairman George Thompson praised the exceptional dedication and rigor behind the newsroom's investigative efforts. Thompson noted that the news organization has consistently uncovered vital information that members of the public and advocacy groups would find nearly impossible to obtain without substantial effort, specialized knowledge, and dedication.

Thompson explained that the news outlet's reporting regularly tackles difficult and uncomfortable realities that many people might prefer to overlook. However, he stressed that public awareness of these harsh truths is vital for driving meaningful systemic change, stating that these challenging accounts provide the public and policymakers with necessary pause to reflect on how to address and fix existing shortcomings.

Among the specific issues brought to light by the reporting, Thompson highlighted detailed accounts of resident deaths occurring within long-term care facilities, the imposition of minimal financial penalties for serious abuse and neglect, and the severe emotional distress suffered by heartbroken families seeking accountability for their loved ones.

The council chairman emphasized that exposing these critical issues has fundamentally transformed public awareness regarding the state's residential care facilities. He stated that the publication’s sustained coverage has ultimately left disability advocates, state leaders, and community members more informed, more concerned about ongoing problems, and more committed to making a difference.

Iowa Capital Dispatch Editor-in-Chief Kathie Obradovich accepted the Media Impact Award on behalf of the newsroom during the gathering in Ames. In her acceptance remarks, Obradovich gave direct credit to Deputy Editor Clark Kauffman, who has led the outlet’s persistent investigative reporting on long-term care facilities and regulatory enforcement.

Obradovich highlighted the significant time, discipline, and effort required to produce this caliber of investigative journalism. She explained that reporting of this depth demands extensive research, requiring the deputy editor to systematically dig through voluminous public records and regulatory filings to verify facts and track administrative decisions.

The editor-in-chief also addressed the external obstacles that often accompany this style of investigative work, noting that Kauffman frequently faces pushback and institutional friction from state government officials and regulatory agencies. Despite encountering resistance, Obradovich noted, Kauffman continues to persist in pursuing the facts and presenting them clearly to readers.

The award ceremony featured representatives from the leadership of the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council. Alongside Chairman Thompson and his daughter, Stella Thompson, council leadership was represented by Executive Director Brooke Lovelace and Public Policy Manager Carlyn Crowe, who participated in honoring the newsroom's journalistic contributions.

The awarding entity, the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council, functions as a federally funded organization established to advocate for the rights, support, and well-being of Iowans with disabilities. The organization works across the state to influence public policy and enhance community resources for individuals and their families.

The council’s operations are guided by a dedicated group of governor-appointed volunteers who reflect a broad spectrum of the disability community. The appointed membership includes individuals with disabilities, family members of individuals with developmental needs, state government leaders, and representatives from various organizations dedicated to disability advocacy.

The Iowa Capital Dispatch, which began publishing in January 2020, operates as an online newsroom focused on in-depth coverage of state government, public policy, and administrative accountability in Iowa.

The digital publication is part of States Newsroom, recognized as the nation's largest not-for-profit news organization devoted entirely to state capital reporting and state government affairs. The non-profit network supports independent local journalism across the country to improve transparency and public engagement in state-level issues.

By presenting its inaugural Media Impact Award to the Iowa Capital Dispatch, the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council underlined the vital importance of persistent, records-based investigative journalism in protecting vulnerable residents, ensuring state accountability, and fostering a more informed and responsive public.
