Michigan Family Navigates Dual County Fairs, Severe Weather, and Double Homemaker Victories

A Michigan family experienced an extraordinary start to September, combining the demands of intensive county fair competitions with an annual multi-state camping reunion and a harrowing drive through severe weather. Gail Malick and her family spent the week of August 31 through September 5 balancing rigorous agricultural exhibition schedules across two states, ultimately earning top honors in multiple homemaking divisions.

The demanding week commenced on the evening of Monday, August 31, when Malick and her grandchildren transported dozens of handcrafted projects to their local fairgrounds in Michigan. Malick completed 52 separate exhibit entries, while her grandchildren brought their own collections of completed projects. In total, the extended Malick family entered an estimated 100 or more items across a wide array of competitive categories, completing registration just in time to return home for dinner.

Following the submission of fair entries, the family immediately transitioned to preparing for an annual out-of-state camping trip. The tight schedule required packing personal luggage, loading equipment, and stocking perishable groceries inside their fifth-wheel camper's refrigerator ahead of an early departure scheduled for the following morning.

By midday on Tuesday, September 1, the family commenced their road journey in a three-vehicle convoy. The traveling group featured a pickup truck hauling the fifth-wheel camper at the front, followed by Malick’s daughter and three young children in a second vehicle, with Malick driving a separate car at the rear to maintain travel flexibility for the remainder of the week.

The caravan traveled across state lines to reach an annual reunion with Malick’s siblings at a regional campground. Because the extended family lives many miles apart throughout the rest of the year, the annual get-together serves as an important tradition, with the group setting up two campsites using a combination of two campers and two tents.

During their first evening meal together at the campground on Tuesday, Malick’s husband announced breaking news from Michigan: Malick had won the prestigious Senior Homemaker Award at their local fair. The unexpected announcement was met with cheers around the campsite and dictated the logistical plans for the rest of the week's itinerary.

On Wednesday, nine family members traveled to attend the childhood county fair in Malick's home state, which her parents and siblings had attended for generations. The group spent the day exploring the grounds under high temperatures until late afternoon, when the needs of the young children prompted a return to the campground for supper.

Although initial storms bypassed the campground on Wednesday evening, weather conditions deteriorated substantially by Thursday morning. Around 6:00 a.m., Malick’s daughter and her three children sought refuge inside the fifth-wheel camper for breakfast as heavy rain approached, prompting concerns that their tent was insufficiently waterproof for the multi-day forecast.

Because the camper could not comfortably accommodate the additional family members and Malick needed to return to Michigan for the upcoming fair ceremonies, a smaller two-vehicle group made the decision to pack up and head north early. Malick was scheduled to attend the Ladies’ Day program on Friday to be presented with her official Senior Homemaker sash, banner, and tiara.

The return journey quickly escalated into a dangerous drive as severe weather swept through the regional border area. Over the final 30-mile stretch of the trip home, the family navigated through two active tornado warnings and torrential downpours that severely compromised roadway visibility, even witnessing a funnel cloud that remained aloft and did not make ground contact.

After arriving home safely, preparations turned to Friday’s Ladies’ Day festivities at the local fairgrounds. In a unique multi-generational achievement, Malick was crowned the Senior Homemaker for the year alongside her 15-year-old granddaughter, who secured the title of Junior Homemaker within her respective age division.

The dual crowning was the culmination of a yearlong collaborative effort that began immediately after the previous year’s fair. Malick had entered 48 qualifying projects toward the award, while her granddaughter entered approximately 32 projects, relying on a comprehensive designated scoring system to outscore competing entrants in both categories.

Throughout the preceding year, the pair spent extensive time together mastering traditional domestic arts. Their preparations included baking yeast breads, assembling intricate crafts, and practicing needlework techniques such as chicken scratch embroidery, allowing both generations to develop and refine their creative skill sets.

Malick noted that her participation in the fair competitions was rooted in a commitment to skill-building, family mentorship, and personal Christian faith rather than personal prestige. She emphasized that the project work served as an opportunity to challenge herself, instruct her granddaughter, and honor God through the talents she had developed.

The logistical saga continued on Saturday when Malick’s husband began the return drive from the campground with the fifth-wheel camper. While navigating through Toledo, another vehicle side-swiped the camper; although the collision resulted in only minimal damage, the incident required a police report that caused a temporary travel delay before he returned home.

The memorable week concluded on Labor Day Monday with an expansive outdoor picnic hosting approximately 40 family members and guests. Attendees shared a holiday spread of grilled chicken, hot dogs, and bratwurst under clear skies, marking a festive end to the summer season as the family turned its attention to autumn routines, back-to-school schedules, home canning, and the upcoming corn and soybean harvest.
