Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai to Deliver Keynote Address at 2026 Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines

Global education advocate and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai has been selected as a featured keynote speaker for the upcoming 2026 Norman Borlaug International Dialogue. The prestigious annual gathering, organized by the World Food Prize Foundation, convenes leaders, researchers, and advocates from across the globe in Des Moines, Iowa, to address urgent challenges surrounding global food security.

The nonprofit foundation revealed on Tuesday, Sept. 15, that Yousafzai will address attendees during the weeklong international symposium. Held every autumn in Iowa's capital city, the Borlaug Dialogue regularly attracts hundreds of delegates united by a shared mission to eliminate global hunger and enhance sustainable food systems worldwide.

The event serves as the central forum for the World Food Prize, an accolade widely recognized as the Nobel Prize of agriculture. By welcoming Yousafzai to the podium, the symposium brings one of the modern era’s most recognizable human rights and education advocates to the center of discussions on global development and humanitarian progress.

Yousafzai gained international prominence as a courageous Pakistani campaigner fighting for the right of girls to receive an education. In 2014, at just 17 years of age, she made global history by becoming the youngest individual ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor celebrating her steadfast defense of children’s and women’s rights.

Her advocacy first drew widespread attention when she began writing a blog documenting everyday life under the oppressive rule of the Taliban during the militant group's occupation of Pakistan’s Swat Valley. Through her public commentary, she emerged as a prominent critic of militant efforts to deny girls access to classrooms, making her a direct target of extremist hostility.

In October 2012, at the age of 15, Yousafzai survived a horrific assassination attempt when an armed Taliban gunman boarded her school bus and shot her in the head. Her survival and resilience captured global attention, transforming her into an enduring international symbol of courage and an outspoken champion for female empowerment and educational access.

Following her recovery, Yousafzai established the Malala Fund in 2013. The nonprofit organization was created to break down systemic barriers that prevent young girls from learning and to expand access to safe, quality education in underserved communities throughout the world.

Over the ensuing decade, the Malala Fund has achieved widespread international impact. According to findings published in its 2025 annual report, the organization has played an instrumental role in shaping educational policy reforms, helped unlock billions of dollars in global education funding, and positively impacted the lives of more than 26 million students across the globe.

Her upcoming appearance at the Borlaug Dialogue highlights the vital connections between education, equity, and the fight to end global hunger, providing a unique platform for cross-disciplinary approaches to sustainable human development.

The World Food Prize Foundation noted that Yousafzai will share the stage with several other prominent international voices and public figures. Among the announced participants are Dr. Rajiv Shah, who currently serves as president of the Rockefeller Foundation, as well as acclaimed actor and author Nick Offerman.

The 2026 Norman Borlaug International Dialogue is formally scheduled to take place from Oct. 20 through Oct. 22 in Des Moines. While Yousafzai has been confirmed as a keynote presenter, the foundation indicated that her specific speaking schedule and session timing have not yet been finalized.

Officials from the World Food Prize Foundation stated that the comprehensive program and full schedule of events for the symposium will be made available to the public on Thursday, Sept. 17, giving attendees and participants a complete overview of the planned sessions and panel discussions.

The Borlaug Dialogue honors the memory and humanitarian vision of the late Dr. Norman Borlaug, an Iowa native who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970. Borlaug is widely credited with saving more than one billion people from starvation through his pioneering agricultural science, specifically the development of high-yielding, disease-resistant wheat strains.

The autumn symposium culminates in the formal awarding of the $500,000 World Food Prize. The prestigious financial award is presented annually to forward-thinking innovators, scientists, and world leaders who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in enhancing the quality, quantity, and overall availability of food supplies across the globe.

Members of the public, researchers, and global development professionals interested in attending the October symposium in Des Moines can find ticketing details, registration materials, and event updates by visiting the official World Food Prize website at WorldFoodPrize.org.
