Over 500 Michigan High School Seniors Named 2027 National Merit Semifinalists

More than 500 academically accomplished high school students across Michigan have achieved semifinalist status in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. Representing 121 distinct secondary schools throughout the state, the 535 Michigan honorees earned their positions by recording some of the highest qualifying exam scores in the state.

The announcement marks a key milestone in the 72nd annual cycle of the prestigious national academic competition. Across the country, more than 16,000 high school seniors have been recognized as semifinalists, placing them in an elite tier of academic achievers.

The road to becoming a semifinalist began during the students' junior year when more than 1.2 million high school juniors took the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Those qualifying as semifinalists represent less than one percent of all graduating high school seniors across the United States.

At stake for these high-achieving pupils is a share of significant financial assistance for higher education. Approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships carrying an estimated cumulative value of $24 million are scheduled to be presented in the spring of 2027.

The scholarship pool consists of diverse funding streams designed to support undergraduate study. Among the available honors are 2,500 individual, one-time National Merit $2,500 scholarships, alongside hundreds of additional awards underwritten by corporate enterprises, private businesses, and participating degree-granting colleges and universities.

To secure an award, semifinalists must fulfill comprehensive academic and administrative requirements to advance to the finalist stage. The ultimate recipients of the National Merit Scholarships will be selected directly from this group of finalists, with honorees being announced to the public across four separate nationwide release windows stretching from April through July 2027.

The roster of Michigan semifinalists demonstrates academic strength spanning both public and private institutions, with noticeable concentrations in several educational hubs across the state. Washtenaw County, anchored by Ann Arbor, emerged as a major center of academic distinction in this year's qualifying class.

Ann Arbor saw dozens of students qualify across a wide spectrum of educational environments. Contenders earned recognition from Ann Arbor Christian School, Community High School, Father Gabriel Richard High School, Greenhills School, Huron High School, Pioneer High School, and Skyline High School, highlighting the broad-based academic performance within the local community.

Oakland County also registered high numbers of qualifying seniors, with several institutions logging substantial rosters of semifinalists. Bloomfield Hills featured extensive lists from prominent academic centers, including Cranbrook Kingswood School and the International Academy, alongside Brother Rice High School.

Other Oakland County districts and private academies produced notable cohorts of qualifiers as well. Students from Beverly Hills institutions, including Detroit Country Day School and Wylie E. Groves High School, earned spots on the semifinalist register, joined by peers from Birmingham's Roeper School and Seaholm High School, Bloomfield Township's Bloomfield Hills High School, and Clarkston's Clarkston High School and Everest Collegiate High School.

Western Wayne County delivered a strong showing through the Plymouth-Canton educational community. High-scoring seniors earned semifinalist honors across Canton High School, Plymouth High School, and Salem High School, reinforcing the area's ongoing presence in the upper percentiles of the national assessment.

West Michigan high schools were similarly represented among the 2027 semifinalist group. Students qualified from communities such as Ada, where Forest Hills Eastern High School saw recognition, alongside qualifiers from Allendale High School, Byron Center High School, and Cedar Springs High School.

The reach of the scholarship competition extended well into Southwestern and Northern Michigan as well. High schools in Battle Creek—including Harper Creek and Lakeview—and Berrien Springs institutions, such as Andrews Academy and Berrien Springs High School, recorded qualifiers, while Alpena High School, Charlevoix High School, and Cass City High School represented northern and Thumb-area communities.

Additional semifinalists were recognized from varied regional schools, including the International Academy of Macomb in Clinton Township, Brighton High School in Livingston County, Chelsea High School, and Berkley High School.

Securing a place on the semifinalist list serves as a benchmark of exceptional standardized testing performance and intellectual capability for these 535 Michigan seniors. The designation reflects years of rigorous coursework and preparation across the state's 121 participating public, private, and specialized secondary institutions.

As the 2026–2027 academic year progresses, these Michigan scholars will submit their finalist applications in pursuit of the thousands of merit-based awards to be distributed in the spring. Final scholarship determinations will be publicized nationwide beginning in April 2027.
