San Antonio Commuters Face Major Detours as TxDOT Permanently Shuts Down Busy I-10 Ramp Near Loop 1604

Motorists navigating the bustling corridors of northwest San Antonio are facing significant travel adjustments as state highway officials execute a permanent ramp closure at a critical interchange. The Texas Department of Transportation has officially shut down an essential access point connecting local thoroughfares to Interstate 10, altering traffic patterns near major commercial centers and educational institutions.

The operational change specifically impacts the eastbound Interstate 10 entrance ramp situated just south of the Loop 1604 interchange. The closure took effect permanently on Monday, September 14, beginning at 5:00 a.m., marking the start of an extended period of localized traffic disruption in one of the city's most heavily traveled sectors.

Regional transportation authorities have cautioned that the resulting delays could persist for months as drivers adapt to new detour routes. The affected area encompasses major retail, business, and academic destinations, with motorists traveling near The Rim and the University of Texas at San Antonio expected to experience the most immediate consequences of the altered road layout.

Drivers departing from The Shops at La Cantera or traveling along the corridor toward UTSA Boulevard are among the commuters most directly impacted by the reconfiguration. Because this heavily used ramp serves as a principal entryway to the interstate for local shoppers, employees, and students, its elimination requires significant rerouting for everyday travel.

According to statements released by state transportation officials, the permanent elimination of the existing ramp is an unavoidable step necessary to facilitate broader infrastructure upgrades. Construction crews require full access to the right-of-way to carry out ongoing roadway improvements designed to modernize the interchange footprint.

While the existing entrance has been removed permanently, state officials have indicated that relief is planned for the near future. The Texas Department of Transportation anticipates opening a brand-new exit ramp in the corridor later this year, which will help establish the permanent traffic flow planned for the modernized highway network.

To help mitigate severe gridlock and guide motorists through the complex construction zone, the transportation department has published detailed detour instructions for various travel routes. Drivers traveling along the eastbound Interstate 10 frontage road are instructed to bypass the former ramp location and continue straight through the consecutive intersections at UTSA Boulevard and Hausman Road.

Motorists following this frontage road route will then be able to enter the main lanes of eastbound Interstate 10 via an alternate entrance ramp located south of the Hausman Road intersection. Transportation planners emphasize that staying on the frontage road through these major intersections will be the most direct path for local traffic seeking interstate access.

For drivers approaching the area from the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road, a more intricate detour has been established. Commuters must first execute an eastbound-to-westbound U-turn at the Interstate 10 interchange, joining the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road until they reach the turnaround at Kyle Seale Parkway.

After completing the U-turn at Kyle Seale Parkway, motorists will travel along the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road to take the initial entrance ramp leading onto the eastbound Loop 1604 main lanes. From there, drivers must keep to the right lane in order to transition directly onto eastbound Interstate 10 by utilizing the elevated flyover ramp.

A separate routing plan has been designated for travelers transitioning from westbound Loop 1604 toward eastbound Interstate 10. These drivers are advised to follow the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road directly through the Interstate 10 junction and proceed to the U-turn located at Northwest Military Highway.

Upon completing the turnaround at Northwest Military Highway, motorists will enter the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road and use the first available on-ramp to merge into the westbound Loop 1604 main lanes. Drivers must then stay in the right lane to access the dedicated flyover ramp that connects directly with eastbound Interstate 10.

This substantial ramp closure represents one component of the broader Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, a massive $1.4 billion infrastructure enterprise aimed at overhauling northern San Antonio's transportation spine. The multi-phase undertaking encompasses extensive improvements stretching across a 23-mile expanse from State Highway 16, also known as Bandera Road, across to Interstate 35.

The overarching initiative is backed by the Texas Transportation Commission under the statewide Texas Clear Lanes program. This targeted initiative focuses resources on alleviating gridlock along Texas's most congested highway corridors, with the Loop 1604 project specifically intended to expand travel capacity, reduce commuting delays, and significantly improve safety for thousands of daily travelers.

State planners project that the comprehensive Loop 1604 expansion will reach full completion by 2028. Until the entire corridor is modernized, transportation officials continue to urge San Antonio commuters to plan extra travel time, remain attentive to updated directional signage, and exercise caution when navigating evolving work zones across the northwest side of the city.
