Stockton Pursuit Leads to Deputy-Involved Shooting and Arrest of 27-Year-Old Suspect

A late-night traffic stop in Stockton rapidly escalated into a high-stakes vehicular chase and a deputy-involved shooting early Thursday morning, culminating in the apprehension of a 27-year-old motorist. Authorities confirmed that despite gunfire being discharged by law enforcement during the confrontation, no injuries were sustained by responding deputies or the fleeing suspect.

According to statements released by the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, the sequence of events commenced shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. Deputies on patrol observed a vehicle in the area of South Tuxedo Avenue and North Pershing Avenue and attempted to execute a routine traffic enforcement stop. Rather than pulling over, the driver—identified by authorities as Julio Llerenas—failed to yield to emergency signals and fled the scene.

The driver’s refusal to comply immediately triggered an active vehicular pursuit through local city streets. Law enforcement pursuits through urban corridors pose inherent operational hazards, requiring pursuing deputies to constantly weigh public safety considerations against the need to apprehend fleeing motorists who display reckless disregard for traffic regulations and pedestrian safety.

As the chase developed, Llerenas navigated through Stockton’s roadway network toward major regional transportation corridors. The pursuit eventually tracked toward the on-ramp leading to southbound Interstate 5 at March Lane, where deputies moved to intercept and halt the fleeing automobile before it could merge onto the open freeway.

It was during this enforcement intervention at the March Lane interstate on-ramp that the situation escalated into a critical use-of-force incident. Sheriff's office officials reported that Llerenas’ vehicle was used in an apparent attempt to assault a deputy on scene. In response to the perceived physical danger posed by the vehicle's movement, a deputy discharged their service weapon.

Under contemporary law enforcement training standards, motor vehicles can be classified as deadly weapons when directed toward officers or bystanders. Tactical protocols generally allow peace officers to employ lethal force if they reasonably believe their lives or the lives of others are in imminent peril. The immediate acceleration and mass of an automobile present severe hazards in close-quarter enforcement scenarios.

Despite the discharge of the deputy's firearm, the suspect did not immediately surrender on the highway on-ramp. Llerenas continued driving away from the scene, extending the pursuit into nearby neighborhood streets before law enforcement units were able to successfully box in the vehicle and take him into custody near the intersection of Melbourne Avenue and Acacia Street.

Remarkably, after the scene was fully contained and the suspect was secured, medical assessments determined that nobody had been wounded. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office confirmed that neither the involved deputies nor Llerenas sustained any physical injuries during the gunfire or the preceding high-speed maneuvers.

Following his arrest, Llerenas was booked on multiple charges stemming from the evasion and the altercation with law enforcement personnel. Official custody records indicate that his bail has been established at $140,000. He is currently scheduled to appear before a judge for his initial arraignment in court on Sept. 14.

The setting of a substantial six-figure bail reflects the grave nature of allegations involving felony evasion and assault against a sworn peace officer. During the upcoming court appearance, prosecutors will present formal charges, after which the court will review bail conditions, formal pleas, and scheduling for subsequent evidentiary hearings.

In accordance with established regional protocols regarding officer-involved weapon discharges, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office will not be handling the primary review of the gunfire. Instead, the California Highway Patrol has stepped in to conduct an independent, third-party investigation into the shooting.

Independent external reviews by outside law enforcement agencies such as the California Highway Patrol are designed to ensure procedural transparency, thorough physical evidence collection, and comprehensive accountability. Investigators will analyze officer actions, physical trajectory evidence, and chronological records to determine compliance with departmental regulations and state laws.

Following the apprehension and the conclusion of on-site operations, law enforcement officials moved to reassure local residents, affirming that there is no remaining or ongoing threat to the Stockton community. Perimeter tape and police units cleared the affected intersections once preliminary crime scene processing was completed.

As the California Highway Patrol continues its independent inquiry and Llerenas awaits his scheduled Sept. 14 court appearance, regional officials will monitor both the legal proceedings and administrative reviews. The incident highlights the volatile dangers associated with midnight traffic stops and the multi-agency investigative structures governing police use-of-force incidents in San Joaquin County.
