Texas Dominates National Ranking of America's Most Unlucky Cities

Residents across the Lone Star State who feel that misfortune follows them wherever they go may finally have statistical validation for their grievances. A newly published nationwide study examining geographic fortune and vulnerability indicates that Texas is home to an overwhelming majority of the country's most unlucky metropolitan areas, dominating the upper tier of the national rankings.

The comprehensive assessment was conducted by the online sportsbook BetUS, which analyzed conditions across the 100 most populous cities throughout the United States. Rather than relying on folklore or arbitrary superstitions, the research team evaluated measurable markers of good and bad fortune to gauge how random chance, financial windfalls, and environmental hazards intersect in each major urban center.

To establish an objective measure of municipal luck, researchers evaluated four primary criteria across each eligible metropolitan area. These benchmarks included the availability of local gaming venues, defined by the number of casinos situated within a 25-mile radius of the city center, as well as historical jackpot success in multi-state lottery drawings, specifically the Mega Millions and Powerball games.

In addition to evaluating opportunities for sudden financial windfalls, the study factored in severe physical risks by reviewing disaster exposure ratings established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The final component examined survival rates following direct lightning strikes, offering a balanced analysis that accounted for both life-altering windfalls and life-threatening natural perils.

When the final results were tallied, Texas municipalities swept the unluckiest rankings to an extraordinary degree. Out of the ten cities identified as having the worst overall fortune in the entire country, six were located within Texas borders. Furthermore, nine Texas communities managed to place within the top 20 nationwide, underscoring a broad regional trend.

Securing the undesirable title of the single unluckiest city in the United States was the West Texas hub of Lubbock. Located on the high plains, Lubbock took the top spot after scoring poorly across nearly every category analyzed by the sportsbook, facing strong competition from other struggling municipalities across the state.

According to the study's findings, Lubbock suffers from a total lack of nearby casino venues and has never recorded a major lottery jackpot winner among its population. Compounding these missed opportunities for fortune is an elevated baseline of environmental risk, with the city registering a high FEMA disaster exposure score of 140.2.

While Lubbock stood alone at the top of the list, the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area emerged as the primary geographic cluster for bad luck in the state, accounting for six of the nine Texas cities featured in the top 20. Just behind Lubbock, the North Texas community of Garland captured the second-place spot nationwide.

Garland’s runner-up placement was driven by conditions nearly identical to those seen in the top spot. The city lacks any casino destinations within the 25-mile perimeter and has produced zero major lottery champions. While data shows that victims of lightning strikes in Garland survived their encounters, this high survival rate was insufficient to offset the city's significant disaster exposure.

Neighboring Irving followed immediately behind in third place, completing a top-three sweep for the state of Texas. Irving mirrors its regional peers by offering no close gaming venues and having never produced a Powerball or Mega Millions victor, leaving local residents with minimal avenues to test their luck.

Irving’s high placement on the misfortune index was further cemented by its high FEMA disaster exposure rating of 150.3. The municipal government's official disaster preparedness records highlight recurrent risks from severe storms, hail, and tornadoes, alongside elevated threat levels related to the city's prominence as a center for multinational corporations and major public events.

The misfortune for the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex extended further down the top ten list, with McKinney and Frisco taking fifth and sixth place, respectively. Along the Gulf Coast, Corpus Christi rounded out the top tier of the survey by claiming the seventh spot among America's unluckiest cities.

Further down the ranking, other Texas municipalities populated the top 20. Laredo secured a position just ahead of Plano, which ranked as the 14th unluckiest city in the nation, while Arlington finished in the 18th position to keep North Texas heavily represented.

Despite the pervasive bad luck recorded across West Texas, South Texas, and the northern suburbs of the state, certain regions managed to evade the negative designations. Central Texas remained absent from the unluckiest list entirely, suggesting a more favorable statistical environment for residents living in that part of the state.

At the same time, the study revealed a major positive outlier within Texas borders. Houston diverged completely from the broader statewide pattern, defying the negative odds to place tenth overall on the list of America's luckiest cities, demonstrating that fortune in the state is not distributed uniformly.
