Wisconsin Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Tiffany Survives Emergency Plane Landing in Lake Wausau

United States Representative Tom Tiffany, the Republican nominee for Wisconsin governor, survived a harrowing aviation incident on Saturday night when the light aircraft he was traveling in was forced to make an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau. The lawmaker sustained minor injuries and was successfully rescued alongside the aircraft's pilot shortly after the impact.

The incident unfolded on September 12 as the single-engine aircraft was on its final approach to its destination. According to authorities, the pilot, identified as Leonard Boltz, executed the emergency landing directly into the waters of Lake Wausau. As the cabin began to submerge, both Tiffany and Boltz managed to extricate themselves from the sinking plane and swim toward shallower water while awaiting emergency personnel.

Following the impact, a specialized airboat crew deployed by the local fire service reached the two men and brought them safely to shore. Both occupants were promptly transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital to receive medical evaluations and care for their injuries.

Campaign officials confirmed that Tiffany suffered a cut above his right eye that required stitches during his hospital evaluation. Following treatment, the congressman was discharged from the medical facility late Saturday evening, having avoided catastrophic harm in what could have been a fatal incident.

Tiffany, who currently serves as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives after first taking office in 2020, previously built his political career serving in both the Wisconsin State Assembly and the Wisconsin State Senate. He is actively campaigning as the Republican nominee in the state's gubernatorial race.

In a public message released shortly after midnight following his discharge, Tiffany expressed deep gratitude for his survival. He credited divine protection for keeping him and the pilot safe and voiced his appreciation for being able to recover alongside his wife, Chris, noting how such traumatic events underscore the fragile nature of life.

The incident also drew immediate cross-partisan empathy from the campaign trail. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Tiffany’s Democratic rival in the gubernatorial contest, issued a public statement extending his thoughts to Tiffany and Boltz, wishing both men a speedy recovery and peaceful time with their families following the close call.

Initial findings from local law enforcement indicated that the aircraft suffered an unexpected mechanical failure as it neared the end of its flight path. Official statements from the candidate’s campaign corroborated that the airplane suffered a sudden loss of engine power, leaving the pilot with limited alternatives other than an immediate forced landing.

The timeline of the rescue unfolded rapidly after the Marathon County Emergency 911 Communications Center logged its first alert of the downed aircraft at 8:49 p.m. Emergency calls were placed by the occupants themselves from the water immediately after the landing.

Emergency teams acted swiftly, with the Wausau Fire Department deploying an airboat to reach the crash site. First responders located the two men and completed the rescue operation by 9:05 p.m., just sixteen minutes after the initial distress call was registered by dispatchers.

The successful recovery operation involved a coordinated effort among several regional and state public safety entities. In addition to the local fire department and the Marathon County Sheriff's Office, responding units included the Wausau Police Department, the Wisconsin State Patrol, SAFER Fire and EMS teams, and wardens from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The emergency landing took place in Lake Wausau in an area situated immediately north of the runway at Wausau Downtown Airport. According to official hydrographic data from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the body of water features an average depth of 7 feet and reaches a maximum depth of approximately 30 feet.

Local authorities noted that Wausau Downtown Airport is distinct from the Central Wisconsin Airport situated roughly 14 miles further south in Mosinee, a regional facility that frequently hosts larger political campaign stops.

As of Sunday morning, the submerged aircraft remained resting in Lake Wausau while recovery logistics were being coordinated. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office announced that safety crews had deployed a specialized no-wake marker buoy around the wreckage site, urging recreational boaters and watercraft operators to maintain a safe distance until salvage teams could extract the plane.

Federal oversight agencies have been formally brought into the matter to determine the exact sequence of mechanical events that precipitated the crash. The sheriff's office confirmed that both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were promptly notified and will head the official investigation into the power failure.

The aircraft involved was identified by investigators as a four-seat Beechcraft K35, a model belonging to the Beechcraft Bonanza family. Tiffany and Boltz were the sole occupants aboard the flight. The Bonanza line historically gained the infamous nickname "Doctor Killer" during the mid-20th century following several high-profile aviation accidents, though modern pilot safety instruction and training standards have substantially advanced over the decades.

Aviation records note that the Bonanza model has previously been involved in other prominent political tragedies, including a 1947 crash that claimed the life of an Oregon governor and other top state officials, as well as a 1975 crash that resulted in the death of a sitting California congressman.

Following his release from the hospital and initial recovery, Tiffany arranged to hold an in-person media briefing in Wausau on Sunday afternoon to provide further details regarding the accident and answer questions about the harrowing experience.
