Fresno City Council Candidate Nav Gurm Faces Scrutiny Over Controversial Survey on Faith and Heritage

A controversial online questionnaire probing the age, ethnicity, and religious practices of a municipal candidate has drawn sharp criticism across Fresno, California, as the local contest for the Fresno City Council District 7 seat gains momentum. The survey has raised serious concerns among residents and campaign officials by bringing deeply personal identity traits and religious attire to the forefront of the civic debate.

The emergence of the questionnaire arrives at a pivotal moment in the local election timeline, with less than fifty days remaining before district voters head to the voting booths to cast their ballots in the upcoming midterm elections. Candidates actively campaigning for the District 7 council position are now grappling with the community reaction and fallout resulting from the poll’s distribution to area households.

At the center of the unfolding controversy is Nav Gurm, an attorney and Fresno native who is running to represent District 7 on the council. Gurm, who is 26 years old, is an observant member of the Sikh faith whose background, age, and cultural identity were specifically singled out and evaluated across several sections of the digital survey distributed to prospective voters.

Residents living in District 7 first began receiving access to the problematic SurveyMonkey questionnaire approximately two weeks ago. The online poll was shared directly with local voters before it was subsequently deactivated, with the survey link now redirecting visitors to a notice indicating that the questionnaire is officially closed and no longer accepting submissions.

In total, the controversial questionnaire featured 18 distinct questions intended to gauge voter sentiment on various candidate attributes. Rather than focusing solely on municipal policy matters, several inquiries explicitly focused on Gurm’s personal demographic background, asking participants to provide their viewpoints regarding his ethnic heritage, his relatively young age, and his practice of the Sikh religion.

Among the 18 items presented, one question specifically focused on Gurm's traditional headwear. The poll directly questioned respondents on whether a political candidate’s religious background or cultural attire—specifically naming the wearing of a turban—would negatively influence or otherwise impact their willingness to cast a ballot for that individual in the council election.

Responding to the distribution of the survey, Gurm demonstrated a resilient attitude, explaining that he maintains a thick skin and is not easily troubled by personal remarks made about him. At the same time, the candidate reflected on the changing boundaries of modern campaigning, observing that topics once considered strictly off-limits in the political sphere are now increasingly being brought into public discourse.

Gurm firmly rejected any insinuation that his faith or appearance represents a liability, emphasizing that his religious attire had never previously been brought up as a subject of concern among constituents. He affirmed his pride in his Sikh heritage, explicitly stating that he is proud of his Sikh faith and equally proud to identify as a Sikh American seeking public office in his hometown.

The controversial survey also drew immediate and unequivocal condemnation from Gurm's political rival in the District 7 race, candidate Ariana Martinez Lott. Putting aside campaign rivalries, Martinez Lott spoke out forcefully against the nature of the questionnaire, declaring that she opposes prejudice and stands firmly against any kind of racist acts directed at anyone, including her political opponent.

Regarding the entity responsible for authoring and distributing the poll, Gurm stated that the survey was carried out by an organization named Political Opinion Research. According to the company's official website, the organization identifies itself as a market research firm based in Michigan that specializes in telephone-based data gathering and statistical voter analysis.

However, an independent examination of the research organization conducted by Action News uncovered several notable irregularities on the company's digital presence. Journalists reviewing the firm's website discovered multiple glaring inconsistencies on its home page, including jarring font changes and numerous obvious spelling errors scattered throughout the published text.

The circulation of the poll also triggered public speculation within political circles over whether Gurm’s own campaign team might have orchestrated the survey in an attempt to attract media attention and boost his name recognition. Gurm was directly asked to address these rumors during an interview regarding the origin of the questionnaire.

Gurm completely dismissed the speculation, clarifying that his campaign operates with full transparency and public accountability. He noted that every single dollar spent on behalf of his campaign is systematically recorded in public disclosures, adding that his campaign budget has not allocated any funds whatsoever toward conducting public opinion research.

Instead of paying for polling operations, Gurm explained that his campaign strategy prioritizes dedicating available resources directly toward direct voter contact initiatives across District 7. While acknowledging that questioning potential campaign involvement was fair, Gurm emphatically denied having any connection to the poll, maintaining that he is well above engaging in such political tactics as the midterm election approaches.
