Three Dead After Los Angeles News Helicopter Crashes Near Site of Earlier Fatal Bus Collision

Three people were killed on Tuesday evening when a news helicopter providing aerial reporting for two major Los Angeles television stations crashed in the Chatsworth neighborhood. The fatal aviation incident occurred in the immediate vicinity of an earlier, unrelated transit collision involving a municipal bus, compounding a night of severe tragedy across the northern San Fernando Valley community.

Emergency personnel with the Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the aircraft plummeted to the ground shortly before 7 p.m. in the 9100 block of North Mason Avenue. The helicopter came to rest in a confined space situated between two commercial buildings, where the violent impact immediately ignited an intense blaze that sent thick smoke into the evening sky and threatened adjacent industrial property.

Firefighters deployed to the scene confronted heavy flames that rapidly engulfed the downed aircraft and spread outward to nearby equipment. Before emergency crews could bring the fire under control, the blaze inflicted extensive damage on four stationary motor vehicles and two commercial storage containers positioned near the site of the impact.

Describing the severe aftermath of the crash, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Capt. Branden Silverman told members of the media that the helicopter was virtually demolished upon impact. Silverman explained that specialized rescue crews faced the delicate and arduous assignment of combing through the charred wreckage to confirm the tail details of the aircraft and account for all individuals who were on board during the flight.

Rescue officials confirmed that the incident resulted in three fatalities, though determining the total passenger manifest proved challenging in the initial hours following the disaster. Capt. Silverman noted at a press conference that one of the victims was discovered outside the aircraft following the crash, while emergency medical personnel transported one surviving individual to a regional hospital for medical care.

Around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, NBC4 issued a statement confirming that the lost aircraft was NewsChopper4, a dedicated airborne news unit that delivered regular traffic and breaking news reports for both NBC4 and its sister Spanish-language affiliate, Telemundo 52. The station clarified that the helicopter was operated on contract by Angel City Air, an aviation provider specializing in aerial news gathering.

Station executives also confirmed that veteran airborne journalist Eliana Moreno was on board the helicopter when it descended into the industrial complex. Moreno, a prominent and familiar figure in Southern California broadcast journalism, had been actively monitoring and reporting on breaking developments across the region as part of the station’s regular evening coverage.

In a combined public statement released Tuesday night, NBC4 and Telemundo 52 expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and the devastation experienced by their colleagues. The broadcast networks extended their heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones, and professional peers of those who perished, underscoring the profound grief felt throughout their shared newsroom.

The aviation disaster occurred roughly two hours after another fatal emergency in the same neighborhood had drawn widespread media attention. Shortly past 5 p.m., a motor vehicle struck the side of a Los Angeles Metro bus near the intersection of West Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue, triggering an extensive emergency response from municipal rescue personnel.

The violent force of that transit collision trapped several passengers inside the wreckage, necessitating complex extrication efforts by first responders. Paramedics transported six injured individuals to area hospitals, while emergency officials reported at least two on-scene deaths; Metro officials later confirmed to CBS Los Angeles that the total death toll from the bus collision had climbed to three.

Because of the severity and scale of the bus collision, multiple regional television news outlets dispatched airborne camera crews to the Chatsworth airspace to document the emergency response and traffic disruptions. NewsChopper4 was among the helicopters operating above the neighborhood when it experienced the catastrophic descent that ended on North Mason Avenue.

Federal oversight agencies are taking charge of the comprehensive inquiry into the disaster. The National Transportation Safety Board announced that a specialized air safety investigator was scheduled to arrive at the crash scene on Wednesday morning to inspect the airframe, evaluate flight data, and begin piecing together the mechanical, operational, or environmental factors that led to the crash.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass arrived at the scene on Tuesday night to receive updates from emergency commanders and speak with reporters. Expressing deep devastation, Bass characterized the day as exceptionally tragic for the entire metropolis, mourning the loss of life and extending her prayers and sympathies to the families of all those who died in the bus crash and the helicopter incident.

California Governor Gavin Newsom likewise issued a statement of condolence, expressing his thoughts for the victims, their surviving families, and the broader broadcast community at NBC4 in the wake of the double catastrophe in Chatsworth. Newsom also commended the rapid deployment and dedicated efforts of the local first responders who worked through the night to secure the crash site and assist the injured.
