In a harrowing incident that unfolded on the night of August 29, two teenagers lost their lives and two others were seriously injured following a single-vehicle crash near the town of Crivitz, Wisconsin. The accident occurred on County Highway G, where the vehicle, being driven by a 16-year-old from Menominee, Michigan, veered off the road and collided with a tree, according to the Marinette County Sheriff's Office.
The initial alert was triggered around 10:55 p.m. when the Marinette County Dispatch received an iPhone crash notification, which provided the coordinates of the accident site. The first responders arrived on the scene shortly thereafter to find the vehicle in the ditch, with a tree having been struck. The investigation revealed that the driver, Landen J. Englund, had failed to negotiate a curve, resulting in the tragic outcome.
Englund, who was in the front seat, sustained fatal injuries. His front-seat passenger, 17-year-old Princeton J. Welty of Crivitz, also succumbed to his injuries. Two other passengers, one of whom was ejected from the vehicle, were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The sheriff's office confirmed that speed was a contributing factor in the crash, which is still under investigation. The incident has been met with an outpouring of grief and shock from the local community, which has been grappling with the sudden loss of young lives.
In response to the release of the teenagers' names, Sheriff Randy Miller addressed concerns on social media. "Unfortunately, we cannot always wait that long since people post on social media, often with inaccurate information, without waiting for an official release," Miller explained, emphasizing the need for official communication to ensure accuracy.
The Menominee Area Public School District extended its condolences to the families and the community in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the families, friends, classmates, staff members, and everyone affected by this terrible news," Superintendent Drew Buyarski wrote. The district also announced additional mental health professionals and support resources for students returning to school on Monday.
The loss has had a profound impact on the community, with local schools like the Crivitz School District, which begins classes on September 8, yet to release a statement. Princeton Welty, one of the victims, had been a basketball player at Crivitz High School, as indicated by his Hudl account.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with driving, especially in the face of poor weather conditions or inadequate driver preparation. It also highlights the crucial role that speed limits and safe driving practices play in preventing such tragic outcomes.
As the investigation continues, the community of Crivitz and the surrounding areas are grappling with the sorrow and loss brought on by this preventable accident. The families of the victims are now faced with the daunting task of coming to terms with their grief, while the community works together to provide support and healing in the wake of this tragic event.
