Utah Governor Cox's New Book Focuses on Healing National Polarization

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has made it clear that he has no aspirations to run for the nation's highest office. However, in his authorial debut, Cox is aiming for something far-reaching. The governor is embarking on a mission to unite a country that seems to be teetering on the brink of disunion, with a new book that tackles the root causes of national polarization.

In "Off Ramp: How to Be a Peacemaker in an Age of Contempt," Cox argues that the root of the problem lies in a screen-driven epidemic of loneliness. The solution, he posits, is to build stronger communities by fostering better ways of disagreeing. Despite acknowledging the daunting task ahead, Cox is hopeful that his book can serve as a starting point for positive change.

Governor Cox sat down with the Deseret News to discuss his intentions behind the book, which is scheduled for release by Penguin Press on September 8. The book is a compact yet powerful tome, encompassing Cox's personal narrative, governing philosophy, and a blueprint for depolarization in less than 250 pages. It also offers intimate glimpses into what Cox considers some of the best and worst moments of his time in office.

One particularly impactful event that shapes the book is the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. The shooting not only shocked the Beehive State but also illuminated the violent undercurrents threatening American politics. "It really did feel like a powder keg in the country," Cox recalls in an interview with the Deseret News.

In the wake of Kirk's murder, Cox took to the press to plea for a more peaceful alternative to the cycle of violence. This sentiment became the foundation for "Off Ramp," which Cox describes as "a continuation of that plea." Here are five key takeaways from the governor's new book:

1. The Charlie Kirk Incident: The book opens with the shocking news of Charlie Kirk's shooting, recounting the rapid succession of reports and the governor's own reaction. Cox's immediate response was to reach out to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump, reflecting his role as a public figure and his commitment to unity.

2. Praise for Erika Kirk: Cox highlights the example of Erika Kirk, Charlie's sister, who offered grace and understanding following her brother's murder. Erika's response served as a stark contrast to the violence that had just unfolded, emphasizing the power of forgiveness and empathy.

3. A Governor's Reflections: "Off Ramp" delves into Cox's personal experiences as governor, including both triumphant and challenging moments. The book aims to show that political leadership can be a force for good, even in the face of adversity.

4. A Blueprint for Depolarization: The core of the book is Cox's blueprint for depolarization, which includes fostering community, embracing differing viewpoints, and encouraging constructive dialogue.

5. Hope for the Future: Despite the book's focus on the nation's divisions, Cox maintains a hopeful tone, emphasizing the potential for positive change through individual actions and collective efforts.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox's "Off Ramp" is a call to action for Americans to engage in meaningful conversations and to work together toward a more united and peaceful society. While Cox has no plans to seek the presidency, his book is a testament to his commitment to the country's future and his belief in the power of community and communication to heal national divisions.
